Issued in 2002 as part of Enslow Publishing's "In World History" series, this overview of the life of Charlemagne for middle-school libraries was my first book. It also began my decade-long immersion in all things Charlemagne.

 Writing clearly and accurately for children is trickier than it seems. In hindsight, I'm glad I got my start on a book with stringent guidelines. Letting your own voice retreat into the background is a valuable habit for writers who want to help others tell their stories.
