THE GRANDEST THINGS:
OUR NATIONAL PARKS
IN WORDS, IMAGES,
AND STAMPS
(2009)

Some projects offer an opportunity to understand and appreciate a major institution in our lives. Packed with beautiful photos, this 116-page hardcover book used U.S. stamps as touchstones to tell the story of the National Park Service from its founding to the present day.

I wrote the text for The Grandest Things, but the book was very much a collaboration. My colleagues at PhotoAssist, Inc., handled the image research and legal clearances, and we worked with designers from the Journey Group of Charlottesville, Virginia, to help create a handsome, one-of-a-kind collectible. The book was jointly published in 2009 by the U.S. Postal Service and the National Park Service, which offered us a rare behind-the-scenes tour of their archive and preservation facility—a site you won't find on your National Parks Passport.
